AIM HIGH WITH SENSITIVE ROBOTICS

The highest precision and quality are essential in aviation. Both aircraft manufacturers and the supplier industry rely on the reliable contact-sensitive solutions of Active Compliant Technology in production. The industry relies on products from FerRobotics, particularly for grinding processes and polishing work, as they guarantee the required consistently high quality while at the same time increasing productivity and documenting the process seamlessly. You reduce the consumption of abrasives, energy and personnel. From production to maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of aircraft, FerRobotics solutions for grinding, paint stripping, cleaning as well as for supporting quality checks such as ultrasonic measurement in action.

Typical parts and application areas of surface treatment:

  • Fuselage
  • Wings, tail units and rudders, spoilers, flaps, slats, winglets
  • Leading edge areas
  • Engine parts (engine cowling, air intake, fan blades and turbine blades)
  • Various structural parts
  • Sandwich elements / honeycomb elements
  • Interior parts such as seat frames
  • Acrylic glass windows, panes, canopy

Automated sanding of aircraft wings

The Active Orbital Kit 601, a three headed robotic sander, is perfect for automated sanding tasks of large surfaces, like e.g. the automated sanding of aircraft wings. The AOK601 ensures a constant force during the sanding process and thus guarantees the best possible surface treatment. This is crucial for modern aircraft coatings.

Robot turbine sanding - blisk grinding by accell + FANUC + FerRobotics

Together with our partner accell we developed a customized solution with our AAK XS to grind the surfaces of the blisk (blade integrated disk or integrally bladed rotor IBR) and to provide unmanned operation time.

Belt sander with active force control for sensitive surface operations – FerRobotics

Together with AV&R, a specialist for automated surface finishing processes in the field of turbine engine manufacturing, we helped to optimize the sanding process of high-tech blades. This Video shows our advanced compliant belt sander, powered by FerRobotics Active Compliant Technology®, with a response time perfectly matched to this application.

Manufacturing of complex contours

The ACF increases the productivity immense with an optimal yield of good parts. The ACT-robotized finishing reduces processing steps and increases process reliability. The Active Compliant Technology guarantees a fully-automatic handling of this precision work, which up to now could only be performed by a few experienced specialists.

Automated canopy sanding with ACF-K by FerRobotics (acrylic glass) 2021

Advanced refurbishment like transparency sanding and finishing is a job for experts. Slightest distortions are not acceptable for customers. To slow off a process causes heat and therefore material changes. There also might be many different processes which often can‘t be changed. FerRobotics tools with real force control are flexible and can adapt to everything – just better than the human hand! Rely on the best to correct the pilot’s view of the outside world.

Rapid contacting of surfaces

This polishing process demonstrates that surfaces can be contacted rapidly and reliably with the ACF. Special functions prevent the formation of grinding marks. This significantly shortens cycle times and the process becomes precisely reproducible and seamlessly controllable. Uniform 24/7 processing ensures a constant level of quality.

Joining with integrated quality control

The ACF offers force control for both, pushing and pulling. That is why this equipment is the ideal automation solution for inserting plugs on car bodies. At the same time, the firm fit of the plug is checked, and all joining parameters are transmitted by the ACF to the control system. Each work step is documented precisely, enabling quality control to be carried out continuously and fully automatic.

Rapid and intuitive stacking of critical workpieces

Thanks to the sensitive ACT, it is possible to quickly grip critical parts such as e.g. glass or ceramics and rapidly and sensitively touch defined stacking heights. The placement process is significantly facilitated through the functional sensitivity. The process creation occurs easily and quickly without complicated calculations.

Automated ultrasound measurement with constant contact to the workpiece

The ACF ensures constant contact between the ultrasound head and the workpiece. Independent of the workpiece shape, the ACF follows the surface curvature with the desired contact force.

Fully-automated quality control of keys

Through the feedback of the ACF via the force-path detection, force curve and trigger point of the key are documented. The test simulates manual operator behavior. With the active contact flange, the process is automated and quality control is integrated into the existing process without major time and effort.
